Any out of character stuff can be discussed here.

From the At Sea thread:

Halfbat wrote:Perrivale raises his eyes slightly, merely as if shading them from the sun as his hat shifts slightly. "Of course, sir. Absolutely clear." He bowed obseqiously. "I hope you will find me, sir, to be the epitomy of restraint and civility as an escort. May I thank you for clarifying the task."

He takes his leave smartly, and orders the men to ensure they have provisions for only a short time but are well-armed with pistols and hangers and reloads - even a couple of boarding pikes. For himself, he arms himself likewise but looks for some of the new grenades on board - the armourer may have a few. He orders a bosun to check the boats - both the captains gig and the longer boats he is allowed to take [do let me know which one!].

Guns and boarding pikes for a diplomacy mission - a lot of my games turn into thinly disguised Carry On films at some time. I had hoped it would take a little longer for this one though...

Must be the vibes we're getting. It's not my 'preferred' style of play, which tends to go more towards teh diplomatic/negotiation style. :)

TBH, I'm getting the impression I made the wrong character, certainly for someone with little knowledge of the ins and outs of Napoleonic naval warfare. A character who's good at romance and first aid doesn't lend itself to easy play on a warship until someone's injured. Do more exprienced BtQ or Napoleonic roleplayers among you have any advice?

Years ago I used to run FASA Star Trek (which dates me :) ). We set it up so that each player had two or three characters, but only one was in play each session.

I don't have a problem with you having a second character and keeping the good doctor on for when we get to the diplomacy - there's room for more Lieutenants & middies, gunners (we're going to need a gunner soon), marines, etc. Some NPCs have been named, but you could always take one of them on if you prefer.

I guess it is probably easier playing round the table when you can see all the other players, but it seems to me that the spread of character types (some officers, some other ranks) doesn't work as well when playing by board like this. Hopefully nobody feels left out. If I was starting this again, I'd probably make all the PCs members of the wardroom.

I think the other thing to take into consideration is the deathly slow nature of PBF games. Looking at what we have covered so far, it amounts to maybe half-an-hours play at my normal table, and thats probably with us being a bit slow. The way I see it, your time will come. At the moment its spotlight 'those built for battle' but I cannot see me doing too well when we hit anything involving actual diplomacy and the need to not be intellectually blunt.

Nice hint about the dual characters as well though. Personally, when I have played I have never had a spotlight problem and thus the all-wardroom, all-the-time issue hasn't come up, but the elongated nature of the beast may well be emphasising things.

Thanks for the comments. I certainly don't feel like anyone's left me out - more that I should have known to create a more naval character for a naval game! I'll make up a gunner, although it won't be until Monday that I'll get the time.

Actually, I was thinking about it and my character has pretty much been tricked out to be the awesome gunner. Having another one might not be expedient as we may end up jostling for the same awesome.

There are two solutions - one is that I retrofit some of my characters traits into some other stuff (I'm sure I can manage that, no worries) or maybe you create someone else? Mr Rutherford, the Ships Sailing Master has just been introduced and thats a pivotal role with loads to do in it. Hey, you could even sling over the subplots around your character and romance too as they are awesome.

If you want some time to tweak your characters or create new ones, we can hold off on the sea battle until (say) the end of the week. That way we can take into account any PC stats when it comes to it.

I don't see a problem with you transferring the doctor's subplots to the new character.

I made up a character, but had a complete brainfart and made him a Ship's Master, which we've already got. I'm only going to be able to post intermittently for the next couple of weeks anyway, so I suggest you go ahead and I'll rejoin the game when I can with a sensible character.

I really don't see how thats a problem. Rutherford has been mentioned in all of one or two posts and then just in passing. Edit the posts, change the names and voila! You're sorted.

That would be great. I think this character has some potential. I'll start filling in details. :)
