[Scotish Central Belt] Need Gamers?

Postby Shaheen » 6:28pm on 17 Feb 11

Got a gaming idea but no people to play it?
Need more regular players or simply for a one-off game?

Image

As you may have seen from my earlier post in the Clubs section, I want to unite gamers around the Scottish central belt.

If you want to game, be it boardgames, war games, collectable card games, role-play games or a live action role-play game, and need more players, then I would really like to hear from you to put you in touch with like-minded gamers.

Please drop me a private message if you are interested. Thanks!

Will certainly do so. Is there anything you're looking for gamers-wise? Gamers of a specific game or anything like that? Because if I come along I plan to bring others with me.

We are a mixed bunch, tabletop wargames/RPGs/boardgames.

We have our own website , but dont use it much. (it has a few stability problems.)

http://www.northayrshirewargamesclub.co.uk/

But it does have pictures of a lot of the stuff we have gathered over the last 30 years. : )

What kind of stuff does your group play ?

I'm currently trying to bring various groups across Scotland together so it's really case by case for each. There's a lot of Games Workshop and D&D naturally but also cry for the more niche roleplaying section. I myself play a bunch of stuff. I posted an introduction on this board somewhere but mostly I'm a RP'er and LARP'er.

As for coming down, when I head down I'll post here again and let you know who I can bring along and their interests. If an email would be easier just drop me a PM and I'll pass that on to you.

I'm certainly interested.

I founded the Strathclyde Table-top Roleplayers group back July last year with a view to, in the short-term, find a gaming group, and, in the longer-term achieve something very similar to what you're suggesting.

I'm very much a fan of mutual cooperation for the greater good so if there's anything I can do, please give me a shout.

I suggested trying to unite the groups in the west of scotland last year, but it wasnt a success, partly due to the lack of groups esp in ayrshire, except the one mentioned above.

Thanks for the positive words folks. I'm going around the different clubs now, trying to meet as many different people and play as many games as possible - it's a tough life! This is a slow process but I'm also attempting to get a charity event going in Glasgow as well as a new club started in Hamilton. While this is all going on I'm thinking up ideas for a website to bring gaming in Scotland together.

If you'd like to know more or get involved with any of these projects the best thing to do is get in touch with me.

Regarding Strathclyde Tabletop, I'm aware of it but haven't got around to attending there yet. When do you meet up?

As for Ayrshire, it's a little bit outside of my remit since I'm focussing on areas around Glasgow and Edinburgh at the moment and then hoping to expand to the rest of Scotland once I get a website sorted out. If there's anything I can do or if I hear about any games in Ayrshire I'll certainly let you know. Which area of Ayrshire are you in?

One thing which you could try to solve is the lack of conventions in the Glasgow area / or the whole west coast. The amount of events in Scotland is shocking.

Hah! That Glasgow Indie Gamers topic is relating to my very mini-con! That's the charity gaming event I was referring to :)

In the long term, I hope that greater unity amongst gamers will give rise to more gamers in Scotland. I want to work on getting everyone to know each other and visiting one another's clubs first and of course, making aware of each other in the first place! GCN is a good starting point but I'm a little more ambitious than the 7 clubs they have on their website at the moment.

Another issue in the West Coast is the lack of gaming clubs in most of Renfrewshire (with exception to 2 I know). However, the more forums and clubs I find out about ( now being a member of over 20 forums ), the more gamers from Renfrewshire I am hooking up with to hopefully, eventually make something of a formal group. If I could do the same in Ayrshire that would be awesome but by the sounds of things the North Ayrshire group do a good job! Any help is appreciated though and again, thank you for your input!

Mr Messiah good sir, what time do you meet? Your meet is now in my calendar :)

Regarding cons, most on that list are just wargaming ones ( and there are no shortage of wargames clubs up here, just rpg ones ) and many of them seem lacking dates for 2011, so the list may need editing.

2 in renfrewshire? lucky you, we have only 1 in ayrshire.

There was a club at Paisley uni, and Strathclyde uni both closed now ( Napier uni too), Glasgow uni is still going but dont run their con, conflagration, anymore.

I saught too do the same as you last year, and admire your enthusiasm, however one main problem i encounted was reluctance from many to actualy do anything.

lol 'Mr. Messiah' :p

Our next scheduled group meet is Saturday 28th May at 6pm in Edward Wylies, Bothwell Street in Glasgow, all are welcome!

Something which I had toyed with previously was creating our own 'social networking', almost like Facebook for roleplayers.

I have a suitable url which I was in the process of making available for a Play-By-Post game I am in the process of setting up but I would be happy to utilise it for a greater purpose. There would need to be some sort of donation system in place unless we could find someone to build a social networking database and front end as any suitable for the purpose alternatives all have costs involved and I am, less than flush at the moment.

If there's enough interest, i'll have a look at possible solutions, otherwise, i'll simply press ahead with our PBP plans.

p1fx: I'm not responsible for the cons available, I just take note of what they are. I deliberately left dates from them as this list is for the long term and was made as a rough header for people to take a glance at what's on and a memory aid for myself. I was trying to be helpful by posting what I was aware of but if you were aware of what I was already then it seems our research matches, which ultimately, is good because I can remain safe in the knowledge that I haven't missed any established Cons. If you want to go to these cons, I would ask you to kindly do the research yourself - the information is all there anyone looking at this list to do that.

Regarding Conflagration, I've heard speculation for the con not being run in 2010 was because there was an increase of all night gaming done within the club, somewhat negating the need for a con, amongst other issues, though I'm not entirely sure of the specifics since I was abroad for the duration of 2010. I have however, heard rumours that there is word of Conflagration happening again, whether it's this year or next, again I'm not sure.

I can certainly empathise with the reluctance factor. I've found that when trying to set up an event there's a lack of committal from most and have now ascribed to the build it and they will come philosophy for all the gaming projects I have a hand in including setting up the event at the Hetherington, helping start up a club in Hamilton and starting a website to put gaming in Scotland on the internet in one place for all to see. Fingers crossed that the gamers around WILL come! ...And even if it doesn't work, I had fun gaming and meeting new people. *shrug*

Monsieur Messiah: You mentioned - "Something which I had toyed with previously was creating our own 'social networking', almost like Facebook for roleplayers."
I am planning to do something similar through a website linking all of the gaming groups in Scotland backed up by a forum which will be dedicated to gaming and finding gamers only (as opposed to chatting about specific games and posting pictures of painted models etc). I have lots of ideas on this but would appreciate any more you have.

You can find out more about these ideas I've had in my mission statement - http://recessiondodgetovictory.wordpres ... -for-hire/
