WHFRP Freeform

Postby AndyKybett » 4:17pm on 02 Feb 12

As some of you are aware i have decided to explain an idea what was discussed at conception , here , to see what peopel think.

I have been asked to write a WHFRP freeform for conception 2013 ; being totally novice to freeforms i have teamed up with Freeform godness "Sue""Queenortart" and a few other peeps .. What i am curious about is will there be enough players to warrent this kind of freeform .

We already have some Ideas and many more more are in the mixing pot ; other sugestions off course welcome

what i can confirm as almost 100% certian are :

That the entire freefrom set in a tavern ; and there will be playable charcters of the four main fantasy races , Human , Elfves , drawfs and yes there will be halflings.

i hope this topic generates some constructive ideas and suggesions ;

Andy

I have never played a free form before but this would get me to play. Count me interested.

Whilst the idea appeals somewhat (I don;t play WFRP now, but it was my first RPG) the costuming for a fantasy game may put me off slightly - but then I am a lazy bugger when it comes to costuming :)

Myonly question would be, would the physical characteristics of the players factor into what character they get, and if so whether it would in turn then determine their liklihood of getting a place?

For example, if I were under 5' would that give me priority over getting aplace as a halfling? If not, then could you end up with many very tall halflings in which case I wonder whether it would be an idea to not create characters who must be halflings (or you could have people having to walk around on their knees all night?)

Halflings could be denoted by specific voices, or hairy feet phys reps, or just a big badge (maybe twice the size of everyone elses name badge, as they're really half the size...). If it doesn't break the scenario then a pre game - these people are dwarves, these elves (please don't shoot them yet), these humans and these halflings might help people get their heads set to the idea. Freeforms can cope with a degree of abstraction to denote things that are just tough to represent physically after all.

i agree with w00hoo but also like all freeforms sometimes a particular charcter suits a perticular person in real life, so thereis always room for movement , but i do like the idea of huge badges for halfings

What you need is a supply of fake beards to denote dwarves, fake pointy ears for the elves and some of those bigfoot bedroom slippers for the halflings/hobbits.

Potentially interested.

I rust Sue has directed you towards Peaky if you want a crash course in freeform writing? there might still be places. However your approach to GM'ing at Conception suggests you are unlikely to have problems going to full freeform, just don't underestimate just how much scheming a room full of players no longer tied to tabletop style can get up to... Don't end up needing to answer questions all the time for 20+ players English is just not concise enough! (assuming you actually want to transmit information beyond 'no you hair brained player you cannot do THAT!')

While one would not want to limit players choice of character it doesn't make much sense if 6'6" rugby players play halflings and a skinny 5' nothing is playing an Ogre. In this case if the 'tall' races are human/elf it's not so bad...
While roleplaying allows folks a lot of freedom to play things they are not there are limits as to what you can pull off, tring to play something in whatever format that requires skills (of the player) which you simply don't have just does not work well (be that warriors in the outdoor latex systems, major politicians/diplomats or whatever). Sure that doesn't mean folks cannot try just that it may not work very well in reality.

Best of luck, you've let yourself in for a lot of work here....

I played a WFRP freeform at Conpulsion some 6-8 years ago. It was written by Liam of Black Lion Games (http://www.black-lion.co.uk/) and had a meeting between Imperial and Kislev nobles and militaries in a border village during the Chaos Invasion. So lots of politics, intrigue, Russian Kislevite accents, dodgy priests of the thief gawd, and other malarky that I vaguely remember.

You might be able to contact Liam to see if he has his old files.
