This section describes how to create a character for the Lions of Judah hack.
This section mimics the Recruitment chapter from Mouse Guard. That chapter is the last one in the book for a good reason. I've played Mouse Guard for over a year now and I have yet to create a single character using the process detailed in the Recruitment chapter. as such, I recommend that you don't read this page and that you don't create your own characters. Play your first few games using the sample characters from the Sample Mission. After a few games, you'll have a much better idea of how the game hangs together. You can then return to this section and create your own characters.
When creating characters, read the following sections out loud to all the players. Creating Lions of Judah is a collaborative process; by going through this section together, the players will create a well-rounded band.
Before beginning, think about the sort of Israelite you want to play. Do you want to play a jaded captain who has seen many young Lions cut down? Or perhaps you fancy playing a young and raw Lion who has yet to be tested in the heat of battle? Also think about what personality and specialties you’d like your character to have.
There are five ranks within the Lions of Judah: Scout, Lion, Veteran, Captain, and Servant. All have their benefits and drawbacks.
(See also page 298 of the Mouse Guard book.)
Your Lion's starting Will and Health scores are determined by your Rank. Choose an age within the ranges given.
| Rank | Age | Will | Health |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scout | 20-25 | 2 | 6 |
| Lion | 25-55 | 3 | 5 |
| Veteran | 40-90 | 4 | 4 |
| Captain | 70-120 | 5 | 4 |
| Servant | 100-250 | 6 | 3 |
All Lions of Judah start with a base Nature of 3.
Should a Lion's Nature ever be reduced to 1, he or she he is too independent and otherwise removed from the struggle of the Israelites to continue as a disciplined and submissive Lion of Judah. Conversely, should a Lion ever reach Nature 7, he or she has swung the other way and become too disciplined and unwavering in the traditions of the Israelite people to continue as a Lion.
Answer the following questions and adjust your Nature accordingly. No Lion of Judah may begin with Nature 1 or 7.
Choose a town, city or region in which your character was born. The Twelve Tribes are united as Israelites, but each is different to the others.
Choose one Skill and one Trait from the land in which your Lion was born. You cannot choose a Trait that a Nature question has ruled out.
The following sections will present you with a number of choices. Each time you choose a Skill, check it off on your character sheet. You may check a Skill multiple times, either from one section or various sections.
Count the number of checks beside each Skill and wise and add 1 to the rating. The maximum Skill rating is 6.
Wises are a special subset of Skills.
Your character starts with a number of checks in Wises proportionate to their Station. These checks may only be spent on Wises. Wises are tallied like skills; count the checks and add 1.
Choose your Wises from the list below. Alternatively, create your own wises as per Specific Wises below.
You can also create Wises based on specific places, creatures, or types or groups of people not listed above.
Resources represents a Lion's pay or available influence in the area to receive room and board. It also captures how resourceful your character is with managing possessions and material goods.
This ability represents who your character knows and how well connected your character is.
All Lions get one check from the following list. They can add a check to one gained from their home city or tribe if they wish.
Choose a name for your character.
Aaron, Avi, Ben, Biran, Chaim, Dan, David, Eli, Ehud, Gershon, Gideon, Hanan, Herzl, Ibri, Isaac, Jacob, Joshua, Kalman, Kfir, Levi, Lotan, Michael, Matti, Nathan, Nir, Ohad, Ori, Paltiel, Pesach, Rei, Reuben, Sahar, Simeon, Tamir, Tzach, Udi, Uriah, Yinon, Yossi, Zechariah, Zion.
Abijah, Adaiah, Bilhah, Bracha, Carmit, Carmel, Dorit, Deborah, Eilat, Elisheba, Galit, Ginath, Herut, Hannah, Iris, Ilanit, Jael, Jemima, Keren, Klila, Liat, Leah, Maya, Miriam, Nirit, Naomi, Orli, Oshra, Pazit, Puah, Rachel, Rebekah, Sheli, Sarah, Tova, Talma, Uriela, Vered, Yifat, Yardena, Zafrira, Zeela.
Create a lineage for your character. The Old Testament is packed with verse after verse of "Noah begat Shem" and suchlike. You don't have to write a ton of verses though; just pick one male Israelite name and that'll do.
When someone asks your character what his or her lineage is, your character can recite the names of his or her fathers all the way back to Adam. Of course, you don't need to role play saying all that; you can just have your character say "I am David, son of Cush, son of..."
Note the names of your parents, whether they are still alive and, if so, where they live.
Write down the name of the senior artisan with whom you were apprenticed.
Invent a friend and give your friend a name. You cannot choose another character, nor the Lord God or the Adversary, as your friend. Your friend can be one of the enemies of the Israelites if you like. This friend will help you without hesitation. Note his or her profession or specialty and where he or she typically lives.
Create an enemy for your character. He or she cannot be the Adversary of the Israelites. He or she can be an Israelite, or a foreigner such as an Egyptian or Hittite. Name your enemy and choose a location on the map of Canaan where your enemy usually is to be found. It is possible for players to choose a common enemy for their characters.
Before proceeding, discuss what is going on in the game and then return to this final section.
Write a Belief based on how your character views being a Lion of Judah. Recall that a Belief is an overarching ethical or moral stance; an ideal.
Write a Goal based on the mission that you've been assigned. This is an objective that can be accomplished in the near future.
An Instinct is a reaction or constant disposition. It may be conditioned through training or natural to the character.
Pick one or more weapons for your character from the list below.
Do not include backpacks, standard clothing, sandals, or other fundamental or common gear. However, you will need to write any armour, if worn, as well as any distinctive gear that your Lion carries.
All characters begin the game with one Fate point and one Persona point.
