Scally

The Set Up

This here is a role playing poem for 3 or more people (probably works best with more players) and shouldn't take too long to play. You will need a few pieces of paper and a number of 1p coins equal to the amount of players, a few pens, a dice bag or container which you can't see through and a pound coin.

Got all that? Great lets move on.

Start by placing all the coins in the bag/container (there should be one penny per player plus the nugget). Now put the bag to one side for a moment, don't let anyone look in it or handle it. Give every player a piece of paper and a pen. Once you have paper and a pen write down why you should have the pound coin. This is your motive. Fold up your motive and place it in easy reach of everyone. Important note ALL MOTIVES MUST LOOK IDENTICAL WHEN FOLDED UP. Now leave the motives for a while and go back to the bag/container.

Starting from the most trust worthy player, take it in turns to draw a coin in secret from the bag/container. Hold it in your fist, don't show anyone what coin you have, don't put the coin down, hold your fist so everyone can see it but not what coin you have. You will be able to feel the difference between the pennies and the pound, if you want you can take the pound.

Once you have a coin you must take a motive. If you have a penny you must pick up your own motive but make sure you get a good look at the other motives. Now hold it in your other hand, don't let anyone else see it, hold your fist where everyone can see. If you have the pound choose whatever motive looks most interesting to you but not your own. Again don't show it to anyone, hold it in your fist where everyone can see. It may be you choose a penny but someone has been a Scally and taken your motive. Don't worry pick up a different motive and hold it as explained.

By now you should all be sat round holding both fists out, one contains a coin, the other a piece of paper. Good then you're ready to start the game proper.

The Game

Another important note IF YOU HAVE A PENNY IN YOUR HAND YOU MUST ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH. IF YOU HAVE THE POUND YOU MAY LIE OR TELL THE TRUTH HOWEVER YOU SEE FIT.

The quietest player starts the game by saying out loud "I have a penny in my hand but the reason I want the pound is…" and then they tell the group their motive for wanting the pound. They then ask any other player why they want the pound.

Play continues with players discussing their motives, accusing other players of lying and defending their claims. The player with the pound must not be found out. The players with the pennies must find the Scally before its too late. If you have the pound feel free to use the motive you have in your hand and outright deny any claims of "hey, that was my motive!" with "of course it is Scally. Oldest trick in the book to accuse others in the attempt the focus will shift from you."

At any time a player can formally accuse another player of being a Scally (taking the pound). If another player agrees with the claim the accused must reveal what coin they hold in their hand BUT NOT THE MOTIVE THEY HOLD. If they are the Scally (hold the pound) the other players win. If they hold a penny then for that unfortunate soul their game has ended and they take no further part. Place the penny down BUT DON’T REVEAL THE MOTIVE THEY HOLD. Play continues until either the Scally has been found or you are down to 2 players. If you get down to 2 players the Scally reveals the pound says "thank you very much" and puts it in their pocket where they get to keep it.

NB. If you have a penny but not your original motive don't worry. When asked just explain your original motive for wanting the pound.

What's this all about?

I'm very interested in Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and about how we communicate through memories and experiences. Somebody once said "It's not what you say but the way you say it." Scally is a Role Playing Game about the way we use language when we are not being honest. It's about reading body language and about what indications you give off when you are lying. And of course having fun with friends.

Try to watch others when they speak about their motives for wanting the pound. Do they hold eye contact? Do they scratch their head or chin when speaking? Do they tap their closed fist on the table. Do they cross their arms or do they keep hiding their fists? Do they fake anger in their speech without the expression or vice-versa? Ask them something they won't lie about, like their name, and then ask them about their motive again.

What else can Scally do?

Murder mystery whodunit Scally. One of you is the murderer but you all have motives to have committed the crime. See if you can catch the villain before they get away with it.

Doppelganger Scally. A group of adventurers in a dungeon but one of you is a doppelganger. What possible motive could you have for being down here?
