[Cold City] Battlestar Galactica

Postby SJE » 12:41am on 08 Mar 10

The premise- a Battlestar Galactica game using the Cold City system.

Characters-

Captain James 'Chance' Gibson - a decorated Fleet officer who lost his wife during the evacuation from the Colonies

Lt. Demeter Saul- an ace viper pilot and adrenalin junkie, she is in contest to frag more Raiders than Starbuck.

Professor Daniel Targ- a renowned philospher from Gemmenon he is a noted expert on Cylon thought and wrote a popular book "Leave No One Behind".

Oracle Mumakt- a veteran of the 1st Cylon War who heard the voice of the Gods, he leads a flock from Virgon.

Stats and suchlike

All of these characters have secrets and agenda's, but this is a Closed game so they will only be revealed after the final session. At the end of the 1st session, they will all draw Loyalty cards (from the FFG BSG boardgame) and someone may discover they are a Cylon.

Initial situation

Pursued by the implacable Cylons, a rag tag refugee fleet once more flees attack. A transport ship, the Aurora, desperately falling behind the fleet with engine trouble. 2 Vipers assigned to protect it and defend it, no matter what. Incoming Cylon raiders- a desperate space battle to save the ship. Still, some shots get through.

Left behind as the fleet jumps away, the last radio message is that the Galactica will be back in 3 days once they've shaken the cylons.

Boarding the ship, the two Colonial Warriors (PC's) find chaos. The Captain has been killed in the last attack- everyone is shook up and panicing. Aboard is a great Gemenon philosopher who speaks about quality of life being as important or more than life itself. Also a Priest of the Lords of Kobol who believes all life is sacred. These 2 are also PC's. There is also some paranoia that a Cylon is aboard- someone has sabotaged the ship.

Then the engineer reports. Engines are totally out- no chance of repair- its dead in the water. The Aurora's life support was also badly hit and lost a lot of O2 and air scrubbers. The 1,500 people aboard have enough air left for 2 days. If they want to make it to 3 days and rescue, then 500 people need to stop breathing right now. For every hour they waste debating, then those 500 people will breathe the days air of another 20 people. What do they do?

Session 1

So, much happened as foreseen. Saul and Gibson blew away some attacking Raiders, whilst within the Aurora, Mumakt and Targ helped calm and organise the people. Then a Heavy Raider got through the CAP and rammed the ship, bring Centurions on board. Saul and Gibson landed, and working with Mumakts knowledge of the ships the systems, the party were able to expel the Cylon Centurions by depressurising the air in the engineering compartment, pumping out their air reserve! I couldnt have planned it better and yet it was the PC's narration and action that provoked the situation!

Left without enough air for all the 1,500 passengers the conflict quickly arose between the Virgon Oracle of the Lords of Kobol and the Colonial Warrior Captain. Captain Gibson had declared he was taking command of the Aurora, they tried to lower the O2 content in the ship to make everyone drowsy and extend the air. Then the Captain ordered the crew (with breather masks) to drag the old and sick to a seperate compartment. At that point the Oracle of the Gods protested, having faith the Galactica would return early. The Captain ordered the Auroras crew to arrest him and confine him to quarters. Influence conflict!

The Oracles oratory and his public trust (he was known to the crew, the Colonial officers werent) meant he won this social conflict and he crushed the Captains Influence down to zero, the crew dramatically turning their guns on the Fleet officers and escorting them from the bridge.

The Philosopher and Oracle did later ask for volunteers to die, and got 100 grandparents and maybe 300 adults - not enough given how much time had passed (they would have needed 600 odd at that point).

In the end they decided to move all the children to on compartment and give it sufficient air for the whole 3 days (along with the bridge). While the Oracle did attempt to die with the rest of his flock, a blinding vision of Jupiter incapacitated himself before he could suicide.

As a result, only 400 people, (including all 300 children) were alive on the Aurora when the rest fo the Fleet jumped back. President Roslin got to knock a whole 1,100 off her survivors whiteboard

BSG Session 2 summary

So I ran the Gates of Tartarus as Session 2. Something of a slow burn episode- the PC’s initially established their reputations regarding the Aurora- despite a campaign of moral supremacy, the Professor and Oracle fared badly- labelled the Butchers of the Aurora (negative trait) they were blamed for the deaths. As Gibson whispers about them “The Cylons only killed 500. The Oracle killed the other 600”. The 2 Lieutenants (for Captain Gibson was demoted by Adama as part of his Influence crisis) are also tarred as having “Failed to Save the Aurora”, despite them arguing that if they hadn’t killed so many Raiders there wouldn’t have been an Aurora left.

As the Fleet searches out habitable worlds (Adama knows there Earth is apparently, but it’s a long way away, so other worlds ‘on the way’ might be useful)

In the Aurora, the Oracle is educating the kids in the history of the Lords of Kobol- how the Gods had been created by the Titans at the dawn of time, but had overthrown their parents in the Titanomachy. He is mid-sentence in describing this, when a sudden vision envelopes him- the Presense of the Gods- and the great, paternal voice of Jupiter say to him “Tartarus”. …

Meanwhile the Lieutenants survey a world in a Raptor- its grey black, with barely breathable atmosphere (lots of nitrogen), reddish brown seas (organically rich), forbidding mountains….. And a giant set of Corinthian pillars visible from orbit. Beyond the Pillars, a great cave/chasm set into the side of the mountains. Potentially useful as a source of metals, organics, water and air, the two officers name it ‘Hephaestus’ and recommend the fleet send a full survey team. As they jump away Lt. Gibson spots that as Demeter Saul enters the co-ordinates, her fingers are bleeding. Pointing it out to Demeter (who doesn’t seem to have noticed it), the female Lieutenant dismissing it as a simple cut. She goes to see a friend in the infirmary on her return to the Battlestar.

Back on the Galactica, the news of the discovery of a new planet spreads across the Fleet. Oracle Mumakt on the near-empty Aurora sees the faxed photo’s of the planet and rushes at once to consult the Scrolls of Pythia- is this planet Tartarus where the Gods imprisoned the Titans? He senses it is. He must go to this world, if only to reign in the military from freeing that which the Gods imprisoned here long ago!

Professor Targ, temporarily stymied on his quest to be elected to the Quorum of Twelve decides that maybe some achievement on a distant planet might improve his reputation- so he talks his way onto the exploration team,- as a noted Academic, he would be a useful archaeologist (Plus Baltar is apparently busy in a crucial stage of his Cylon Detector experiments) . But he also invokes his negative Aurora reputation to get him away from the fleet- earning him the negative temporary trait “One Way Ticket!” when he wins on a negative die.

Lieutenant Gibson also spots on the survivor lists a familiar name- Amanda Gibson, his wife… apparently on the mass-transport Pergamon.

So, once more all 4 PC’s are together - on a 3 Raptor expedition to Hephaestus (or Tartarus as the Oracle keeps calling it). They are accompanied by 6 Marines and a number of Tyelium miners and prospectors, including a James Wyatt who knows Targ back from his days as a student in the University of Gemmenon.

They send one Raptor to land near the ocean and take water samples, whilst the other 2 Raptors land near the cyclopean Pillars. Seeing them framing the vast, dark cavern beyond, the Oracle proclaims that these are the Gates of Tartarus!

Examining the massive pillars, they are disappointed to find them long ruined, the wind and eons of erosion having rendered any markings or carvings on the exterior illegible.. But…. hypothesises the great mind of Daniel Targ, if they can find a large piece of the pillar that may have broken away and landed carving side down, then perhaps those inscriptions would still be readable.

And indeed there are many fallen stones and pillar fragments around the massive columns- looping a chain around one and tying it to a Warthog… er jeep, and everyone putting their backs into it, they flip a massive boulder. On it are carvings of a man with a lightning bolt in his hand, casting a number of strange figures into a lake of fire.

Leaving a base camp by the Raptors and pillars, the group drive a jeep into the great caverns (a klick or two from the pillars) with a miner and 2 marines.

Inside they find a great cavern, stretching further than their lights can see. Stalagmites and stalagtites break up the floor and ceiling, but they can still maneovre the jeep around a surprisingly level floor. Deep in the bowels of the cavern, they find 2 worked tunnels leading further down. Too small for the jeep, they disembark and head down the left tunnel.

A few hundred feet in, Demeter Saul feels a click beneath her feet. Looking down at the rock pebbles and dust, she sees a glint of metal- she’s stepped on some type of metal plate! Her first thought is that it’s a mine-she calls over Gibson , and warns the rest get clear. Chance volunteers to do his best to disarm it, but then Professor Targ volunteers to use his archaeological tools to assist instead. Trusting that she will remain perfectly still, Targ brushes away the dust and dirt… revealing not a mine or pressure plate but a metal breastplate! Its made of some aluminium/titanium alloy, had a mesh connecting it to a backplate and seems quite archaic.

Continuing down the tunnel they find another enormous chamber beneath the earth- this one though is quite obviously worked and contains a great pool or lake of liquid Tylium! Torch sconces around the walls puzzle the group, but they endeavour not to cause any sparks that might light the petrochemical rich basin. Exploring around, they spot a tarry mass about 3-4 meters away from the edge of the tylium lake. Looping some rope, Lt. Saul trusts the others to anchor her as she leans out over the strange lake and lasso’s the tarry mass - pulling it in with all their strength.

Cleaning off the dried and oxidised tylium they find a metal robot body- it puts them in mind of an original Centurion but though it has a red monocular eye, it has a much larger, helmet crest/vane (close to a Spartan helmet) and is of no model that anyone can recognise from the 1st Cylon war. A thought in the Oracles head- could these be the ancient Titans of legend?

Quickly exploring the right hand tunnel, they find a great scrap yard of archaic metal - strange chariots of silvery metal, more arms and armour, broken and shattered blades and unknowable gears- all seemingly abandoned millenia ago. Its value as a source of refined and transportable metal is immense for the fleet- these can be easily melted down into new shells or even new Vipers. Truly the contents of these great caverns could enrich the Fleet quickly and immensely. Lets hope that no Cylon skin jobs are present to quietly signal the Cylon fleet when no one is looking?

Heading back to the surface, their radios pick up chatter and alarm on the comms. Raiders have been detected on DRADIS- Sonic booms resound through the atmosphere! They radio that 2 of the 3 Raptors should evac NOW! The third is to head towards the cavern and they’ll meet it.

Racing into an Action conflict, Lt. Saul (wo)mans the wheel and races the jeep out of the cavern with everyone piled on and hanging on for dear life. Up ahead they can see the last Raptor racing towards them, 3 Raiders screaming down from out of the sun. At the point of contact, Saul slews the jeep around 180, driving it alongside the flying, raptor. The occupants make daring leaps from the speeding jeep onto the side of the Raptor and into it. Saul leaves it to the last second before turning the wheel away and jumping herself onto the Raptors wing- she scrambles to safety as the jeep veers off, hit’s a rock and cartwheels away, A-team style.

In the Raptor, Gibson hears an “Aargh… !” as a lucky Raider shot takes out the pilot. Gibson and Targ pull on space helmets and seal the door to the main compartment. Gibson jinks the Raptor left and right while yelling at Targ to get ready to pull the big FTL lever. Pulses racing, they suddenly brake, Raiders overshootin and then head for space, knowing that jumping in the atmosphere is a good way to end up dead. Trusting the civilian not to panic and to pull the lever only when ready, Gibson races up…. When Professor Targ spots an incoming missile…. Closing… going to impact… 3...2.. .JUMP!

Targ pulls the lever a split second before impact, but jumping at the very edge of atmosphere overloads the FTL engine and sends a tremendous current back through the console, exploding out and burning him. (Once more Targs negative die (from One Way Ticket) comes up top) and he buys himself the negative trait “Extra Crispy”.

They’ve made it back to the Galactica with news of a great find- refined tylium and metals that could immeasurably aid the Fleet - needing only to be picked up without months of mining or refining. If they can get in and out without a Basestar interdicting the planet. But the Cylons were on the scene awfully fast… was one of the 40 odd landing party members a Cylon? And what does the presence of the strange looking centurion mean? Did Cylons exist more than 40 years ago before the Graysons invented them? Were the Cylons the Titans of legend? And if they created the Gods, what does that mean?

Next week is the 3rd and final week- having set the scene its all up to the players to decide what happens next...
"Forth, and fear no darkness! Arise. Arise, Riders of Theoden. Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword day... a red day... ere the sun rises. Ride now!... Ride now!... Ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending!"

BSG Session 3

Secrets – These are spoilers for everyones dark secrets (revealed to the players individually at the end of session 1). If you don’t want to know until it happens, don’t reveal.
Elder Mumakts secret
Spoiler: show
- He was diagnosed with schizophrenia

Lt. Sauls secret
Spoiler: show
- she has Leprosy, which is being held off by an ever-diminishing supply of tablets.

Professor Targs secret
Spoiler: show
- as a student he was a member of the radical Peace Now! Movement who wanted to appease the Cylons in the First Cylon War.

Lt. Gibsons secret
Spoiler: show
- he is a Cylon (No. 9) and charged with sabotaging the Galacticas air supply so they are forced to refuel at a planet. Then he can pass on co-ordinates to the Cylon Fleet with his silver Cylon radio. At the end of last session, he stole some explosives from the Tylium miners and has planted it in Galacticas environmental control and oxygen reserves with a remote control detonator.

After the events of last week, the group are recommending to CIC that a scout Raptor needs to return to Tartarus to determine the Cylon presence there. If its low, then they can risk picking up the very useful Tylium and refined metal in the caverns.

Gibson and Saul have volunteered for the Recon and are in radio silence in a powered down Raptor- observing Tartarus from the dark of its moon. Their scopes show 5 Heavy Raiders landed outside the Great Cavern. No Basestars, no other Cylon activity so they suspect a trap. To pass the long hours, they talk

– Saul mentions “Didnt I see your wife’s name on a survivor list”
Gibson “Yeah I saw it too”
“Arent you going to see her?” [/i]
“What is its just another woman with the same name? I’m not sure I could...”
“I’d go see her if it was me.” – Saul. Just then “Bing-bingely-beep “ from Sauls wrist. She automatically pats her pockets and comes up with a bottle of pills. She takes the last pill.
“What is that?” asks a concerned Gibson as he spins up the FTL drive
“Oh, just some medical trial Doc Cottles got me on.”
“Medical trial? On Viper pilots? Must be someone else he can try them on”
“Its for improving reactions and stamina. But I think I’m getting the placebo- it hasnt had any effect on me” lies Saul, as she FTL’s back to the Galactica. They split up, Gibson saying he has to go to the Hyperion to meet this Amanda Gibson

Meanwhile in Sickbay Mumakt is visiting the badly burned (Extra Crispy) Professor Targ- its also the last day for filing nominations to the next Quorum elections. Mumakt brings Targ some homebrew alcohol- the “Callie Special” from engineering. Beeping! from his monitors warns this might be a bad idea

Targ asks Mumakt “Elder, do you think I should stand for the Quorum”
Mumakts answer is a masterpiece of diplomacy “My friend, while you have a great mind and many great contributions to make to our society, I see your role as perhaps more a scientific advisor to those in power- sadly the recent winds of public opinion haven’t blown your way, and there is your physical condition to consider...” he says to the Invisible Man.
“That appraisal accords with my own friend Mumakt. I had hoped.... but clearly..” he trails off
Talk now turns to who is now standing for the Quorum of Twelve- Zarek, Baltar etc,

Meanwhile, Lt. Gibson finally goes to see his wife. For it is the correct Amanda Gibson, who’d been distraught at the thought of losing her husband. Their reunion amidst the crowded refugee ship of the Hyperion is pure “An Officer and Gentleman” . Happy to see each other, Amanda asks James if she can fly back with him to the Raptor, to share married quarters. “Errr.. No, not yet” murmers James, torn. A strange moment passes between them. Amanda looking at him as if seeing him for the first time. Then he must go, on a vital mission....

Lt. Saul enters Sickbay for some pills- she greets Targ and Mumakt before heading over to Doc Cottle. They are just talking when

BOOM !

Sudden. Explosive. Decompression.

The corridor outside is venting air- papers, pills and light objects are being sucked out of sickbay! Saul grabs at the door but cant close it! Mumakt sees Doc Cottle getting sucked from the door. He releases his deathgrip on Targs bed and grabs the Doc! (another quality of life choice) as Targs bed goes wheeling to the door, jamming it open. The desperately injured Saul rolls, falls out of his gurney and shouts “Kick it” to Saul. Between the two of them, they kick the bed out of the door, allowing it to finally close and stop the atmosphere escaping.
Gibson is outside in a Raptor, when he spots the hull breach – he does some scans and dodges some debris and bodies. Inside the Galactica the alarms and damage control teams are in action. Targ tries to call in to CIC but gets bawled off the line by Colonel Tigh for cluttering up his channels.

As things settle down, Gibson finally makes it to Sickbay to see how Saul is doing. He asks Doc Cottle about these ‘medical trials’ he’s conducting, over Sauls protests “Are you sure Viper pilots are really the people you should be testing this on? What are you giving Saul?”
“Tell you what son” says Cottle, lighting a cigarette “How about I leave the Vipering to you if you leave the doctoring to me?”
“You have no right to interfere. ... Lt. Gibson” says an angry Demeter Saul, losing her Trust in Lt. Gibson.
“Besides, there wont be any more medical trials- the last of the pills went out the airlock” notes Cottle. Demeter knows its now just a matter of time before she wont be certified flight-worthy...

Mumakt has been doing his pastoral thing, circulating around Medbay and keeping peoples spirits up. He has a wonderful time with a little old lady, who’d like to play a game of canasta. (I tell Mumakts player to go away for 30 seconds. To rest of the group “You see Mumakt talking to an empty bed” . Player returns. To the rest of the group he says ) “So, who is up for doubles of Canasta? Mrs Hera can show us how its done!” . Which leads to the bandaged Professor Targ putting an arm around his shoulder and asking him if he’s been overdoing it lately as there is no one there. (Targs players immortal line “We were OK with him talking to an empty bed. Its when he wanted the empty bed to teach us cards that we had to draw a line” )

As the Galacticas investigations show sabotage, and running low on oxygen (curiously similar to the predicament that the Aurora found itself in 2 sessions ago), they will have to return to Tartarus for repair and atmospheric re-supply.
So a plan is launched. The Aurora will transport 5 Vipers and the crashed Heavy Raider to Tartarus, ahead of the Galactica. Their mission is to take out the Heavy Raiders on the ground and any Centurions in the Caverns. Then the Galactica will jump in (without the Civilian fleet). If a basestar does jump in (as they suspect there is a Cylon agent on board) then Mumakt volunteers to fly the captured Heavy Raider (with a nuke on board) onto the Basestar.

Jumping in on the other side of Tartarus, the Colonials achieve complete surprise against the Cylons, swooping in at low altitude with their Vipers they are easily able to blow the grounded Heavy Raiders to smithereens. The bad news is that the Galactica has vented more air and jumps into the system, hours before they expected. Two Basestars then jump in, the Cylon trap sprung!

“We must get back to the Aurora and into that Heavy Raider” shouts Mumakt to Saul, as they abandon their plan to clear out the caverns
“But who’ll take care of the Centurions inside the Cavern?”
“I will” surprisingly volunteers the pacifist and injured Professor Targ.
“Lets go!” Mumakt jumps into the back of Sauls Viper and they speed off to the Aurora

“I cant let you do that” says Lt. Gibson as his Viper pulls in behind Sauls and opens fire!

“Damn you Cylon” - Saul desperately spins her Viper around 180 (and keeps flying backward) as Mumakt launches chaff. The two vipers, near nose to nose, start firing everything they have at each other. Gibsons betrayal of Saul is limited by how little trust she had left in him after he pried into her medical affairs, and her superior skills in a Viper make up for any impact her disease has had on her reflexes. They dogfight back and forth, a rolling, dizzying spectacle of twists turns and reverses. Saul wins the exchange of fire and Gibsons Viper heads towards the ground in flames, him ejecting as it does. Unfortunately he lands badly, shattering his leg.

“Well done Lieutenant, now get me to that Heavy Raider!” congratulates Mumakt.
“Sorry Father its a one way mission and I have to do it alone!”
EJECT- BOING!
Mumakt is emergency ejected from the rear seat of the 2-man Viper. Saul heads to the Aurora alone!

Meanwhile back on the ground- Professor Targ joins the Colonial Marines as they fly a Raptor into the Great Cavern ( “None of this pussyfooting around with landing outside and driving in” ) but comes under intense fire from the group of Centurions and skinjobs inside. Unnable to clear, the Raptor comes down and Targ is ‘Captured by the Cylons!’ (love those negative traits) Brought before the Cylon skinjobs, gathered around an archaic looking Centurion, he sees a beautiful blonde (Six), a pretty, middle aged brunette (Three) and Gibson! (Tartarus-Nine)

(Its at this point we discover that Cold City is even more perfect for BSG as the
baseline model Cylons can use Gibsons original stats (with Revealed Cylon modifications))

“What do you want with me? Why haven’t you killed me like those Marines”
Tartarus Nine - “Because Professor- we want to work with you- to overcome our past differences and instead explore the wonders of the past together. You have found an unknown model Cylon that predates both our cultures- its thousands of years old and we can learn such wonders from it if we work together”

“Well just pass me my tools, and I’ll see if I can examine his circuits” says Targ, his scientific curiosity getting the better of him as he works with the Cylons to reactivate the Ancient Centurion.

In space, the Galactica is coming under terrible crossfire from the two Basestars, explosions and ack ack and fighter clashes lighting up the space between the massive vessels. Lieutenant Demeter Saul pilots a lone Heavy raider through the inferno. As she does so, she peels off her flight gloves, seeing her numb fingers, the leprosy unchecked now affecting her hands and feet. The basestar’s organic hanger yawns before her. Behind her the nuke ticks down to Armageddon.

“Blaze ... of... Glory...Beat.. .this ... Starbuck!”

KABOOM!

The Basestar cataclysmically explodes, allowing the Galactica to concentrate its fire on its one remaining enemy!

Meanwhile, its all gone Enemy Mine with Galactica-Gibson and Mumakt. Both have landed in the wastes of Tartarus- Gibson near his crashed Viper but with a broken leg. Mumakt on a ridge with his revolver. Gibson tries to get to his radio to warn the basestars not to accept any Heavy Raiders on board, but a lucky shot from Mumakt whistles down and shatters the Cylon’s only radio! They exchange a few shots, winging each other.

“This is pointless!” Shouts the cylon
“Pointless for you- I’m going to call in air support” calls Mumakt from behind his ridge.
“Elder Mumakt. Will you do something for me? In return for my surrender?”
“What, cylon!” spits Mumakt.
“Look after my wife”
“Your wife? What would a Cylon care for his wife? Unless she is a cylon too!”
“She’s not. We were married before I knew I was a Cylon. I love her. I care for her. Even now. She isn’t a Cylon, I swear. Look after her?”
“I’ll turn her over to Baltar to test... but if you give up now, I’ll look after her- if shes human!”
“Swear it by the Gods?” begs Gibson
I swear.”
“Then I give up.

Bang. Gibson eats his pistol.

In the Great Cavern, they are oblivious to the destruction above. With the aid of the modern Centurions and the skinjobs, Targ is ready to try to power up the millennia old Ancient Cylon with its elongated Spartan headcrest. But how will he escape? Is he really a collaborator with the destroyers of the Colonies? Can he give the Cylons the advantage of whatever knowledge and technology from the past that this ancient robot contains? He powers it up.

“By Your Command- Where is the Imperious Leader?” duotones the Cylon commander, Original Series-style.
“These humans have harmed him!” cries Targ pointing at the skinjobs! “Kill them”
“By Your Command....”
Havoc. Destruction. Death. Resurrection. The Ancient Cylon clashes with the modern, cycles of destruction and epochs of history repeating themselves as Centurions and skinjobs and Philosophy professors are caught in the crossfire and perish.... (Targs narrative ending)

Epilogue...

“How did I survive?” wonders Elder Mumakt, Veteran of the 1st Cylon War. How on Earth did he survive again? He certainly lived up to his name of Elder and veteran. The Galactica had just enough time to rescue Mumakt and take on enough atmosphere to refill the O2 tanks, before jumping back to the Fleet. While Demeter Saul and Professor Targ have been lost, Tartarus still holds its ancient secrets and prisoners. And as he counsels Amanda Gibson through the revelation that her beloved husband was a Cylon, he wonders how long it will be until he sees Number Nine again...? Does anything ever end, or are we doomed to eternally recur, re-imagine and re-enact the cycles of existence...?

After-Thoughts.

I thought Cold City was a very good fit in play for BSG. The mechanics worked well for the flavour of the show. As one player observed “BSG makes more sense if you think of it as a Cold City game- it explains how Apollos’ “His Fathers Son” trait keeps flipping from negative to positive from episode to episode!
Mixing in the Loyalty Cards (from the BSG boardgame) also worked relatively well but I would have liked to build up the tension and paranoia as to who was the cylon a lot more (2 players guessed by the 2nd session) One thing I might do differently is to allow the players to create their own BSG characters next time rather than use my pre-gens – that would give them more connection and possibly more empathy for them.
But overall, people said they enjoyed it, I enjoyed running it, the combination has a lot of promise and I might well run some more again.

Does sound like it ran really well and the system had a very good mesh with the feel of the show.

And I've realised what I did wrong- it came to me in playing one of Scott Dorwards wonderfully twisted Hot War scenarios. Its fine for characters to all have secrets- but their secret agenda shouldnt be to keep the secret- thats inherently passive and dull. Their agenda should be active- driving them forward to accomplish something rather than preventing others from discovering their secret. Thats where I went wrong.

"Forth, and fear no darkness! Arise. Arise, Riders of Theoden. Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword day... a red day... ere the sun rises. Ride now!... Ride now!... Ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending!"
