That was my gripe about Episodes 1-3. Urgh. There's a bit of Disneyfication involved in The Last Jedi, the cute kids spring to mind, especially that scene at the end (which reminded me of Fantasia), but they could have been a lot more heavy-handed.

Is it me or are all Star Wars battles curiously 2-dimensional? They remind me of WWII naval battles in the way they're depicted - the capital ships in a single plane, the fighters swarming around them. The other thing is that there doesn't seem to be anything between the massive carriers and the fighter swarms - where are your mobile escort ships?

Been busy preparing for Christmas and travelling now, so a quick shout out to Star Wars The Last Jedi Porgs.

Yes, I suspect they were totally inserted into the movie by Disney to sell toys and stuffed animals, and yet I still bought porgs for the kids because, hey, they may turn out like that furby craze a few years back, so might as well grab them now.

Not seen the film yet but the story I heard was that it was easier to digitally change the puffins in the (real) background to porgs rather than remove them.

I've seen TLJ twice now. I enjoyed it! There are some bits that definitely needed thinking out a bit more, but overall thumbs up. The porgs, do not detract from the enjoyment of the film imo. :D Merry Christmas everyone!

Just watched the worst film of 2017: Brawl in Cell Block 99.

Some of the acting isn't too bad, but the plot, dialogue, 'fight' scenes, and effects are all absolute tosh. An utter waste of time and money. Not recommended for anyone, and if someone asks if you want to watch it: maintain eye-contact and back away slowly, then alert the authorities!

Just started with the second series of Travelers on Netflix. Still keeping the mystery of the future alive and some great characters too.
Good stuff!

Also the second series of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency starts on the 5th January.
Cheers,
Darran

I watched Cockneys vs Zombies yesterday. It was great fun. Not as good or polished as Shaun of the Dead but fun in it's own right. Worth a watch on the "horror" channel if you spot it.

Grabbed an eyeful of Dunkirk with the family last night at home. Both Minor and the better half had raved about how excellent it was and how much they thought I would enjoy it. Ultimately, it was a little disappointing, which is to say that it's a thoroughly brilliant piece of film making but an object lesson in not listening to other people build things up. For me it's strength led to its weakness in that its desire to show things from varying perspectives, whilst very effective, meant that I struggled to get fully involved in any one section deeply enough; I felt the tension, but in a slightly detached way. Other war films cleave you deeply to a small number of characters so that you feel a part of the squad but Dunkirk went broad which meant a tale told through a slightly impersonal lens. Certainly an 8/10 film for me.

Watched The Last Jedi with my son today as it's his 15th birthday. We both enjoyed the film and I honestly cannot see where all the hate is. Roll on Episode IX.
