RPG Abbreviations and Tags - Request for help

Postby DigitalMage » 6:19pm on 01 Feb 18

With the proposed return of the Tavern it has been suggested to have only a few forum sections, but to help users find threads they may be interested in to prefix any thread title with a Tag in square brackets denoting the RPG system and edition (see examples below). Whilst some RPGs have short enough names to be a tag in full, e.g. [Fate Core], and others have well known abbreviations, e.g. [D&D5], others may not have an agreed abbreviation and be too long to use in full.

I would therefore like your help to compile a list that could be used in a sticky / pinned post on the Tavern to direct people to use an agreed set of tags. So, starting with the small list below could each person who wants to add to it copy the entire list into a new post and add their entry in the appropriate place (ordered alphabetically by RPG system and edition in the main) bolding their new entries.

If you have some debate about a suggested tag, e.g. that [Fate] is too broad and should be [Fate Core] or [SoF] for Strands of Fate then please just make a new post and hopefully the full list won't get too far back in the history of this thread (if it does I may copy and paste to keep it current).

I would also suggest not adding a "1" for first editions, as some games may only have one edition, and only after the tag starts seeing use may it get a 2nd ed. So for example you would have [MRQ] Mongoose RuneQuest and [MRQ2] Mongoose RuneQuest 2nd Edition.

So a short list to start things off with some potentially debatable tags!

RQ and RQ2 are functionally the same game. RQ3 is a different game that happens to be set in Glorantha.

How are you differentiating FASA Dr Who from the more recent one?

I can’t copy easily (I’m on the phone) but would add:

BRP - Basic Roleplaying
C&S - Chivalry & Sorcery
CoC - Call of Cthulhu which has editions up to 7
DQ - DragonQuest
EPT - Empire of the Petal Throne (I think there were at least 2 editions but I’ve never seen them differentiated)
GURPs - you’ll need editions up to 4 but only 3 & 4 will be relevant
T&T - Tunnels and Trolls

Perhaps just put the name of the game in the tag and only add the edition number if it’s relevant to the post. Often, it won’t matter. Unless there is an invisible horde of Shadowrun 2e players descending upon you with dial-up decking questions.

A couple of other suggestions (possibly more relevant for conventions)
PF (or PFRPG) - Pathfinder Roleplaying Game
SF - Starfinder Roleplaying Game

Those may occasionally come with PFS or SFS, for Pathfinder/Starfinder Society (organised play campaigns)

There's a slim chance of needing TFT for The Fantasy Trip now Steve Jackson's got the rights back, depending on what SJGames does with it

If I saw a thread labelled RQ I would just think it would be about RuneQuest, regardless of the edition. Same with D&D.

Isn’t it RQ7 too?
Cheers,

I would use top level: D&D, RQ, Trav, T&T etc

If you are so edition specific it might limit things quite a bit.

But this is voluntary, so YMMV

I think where you are discussing rules and scenarios you have to be edition specific, especially where there are major differences between editions: GURPs 2 & 3 aren’t very different: 3 is an expanded version of 2 and you can mix and match. 4 is still GURPs but there are enough changes to rules and chargen that you can’t do the same. The same goes for Ars Magica: although the core concept remains the same, there’s enough changes in Virtues and Flaws between editions you need to be careful.

The universally agreed abbreviation on the boards for this game is [DWAiTaS] or [DWAITAS]
[DWRPG] is generally agreed to be the abbreviation for the FASA Dr Who game.

I would agree, but it has been re-branded with the 12th Doctor edition :( I suggest we just suffix with Publisher if needed

Latest full list, the recommendation is to add edition number if the post is edition specific, e.g. rules questions. Where the edition cannot be clearly defined by a number, additional information such as publisher may need to be added, e.g. [RQ2 Mongoose], [DWRPG Cubicle 7], some suggested examples below.

[BRP] Basic Roleplaying
[BitD] Blades in the Dark
[C&S] Chivalry & Sorcery
[CoC] Call of Cthulhu which has editions up to 7
[DCH] DC Heroes (Mayfair Games)
[DCU] DC Universe (West End Games)
[DCA] DC Adventures (Green Ronin)
[DQ] DragonQuest
[DW] Dragon Warriors
[DWRPG Fasa] Doctor Who RPG by Fasa
[DWRPG Cubicle7] Doctor Who RPG aka Doctor Who Adventures In Time And Space, by Cubicle 7
[D&D] Dungeons & Dragons
[EPT] Empire of the Petal Throne
[Fate] Fate; if need to be more specific use game name , e.g. [Fate Core]
[FitD] Forged in the Dark
[GURPS] Generic Universal RolePlaying System
[M&M] Mutands & Masterminds
[MSHRPG] Marvel Super Heroes: The Heroic Role-Playing Game (TSR, 1986)
[MSAGA] Marvel Super Heroes Adventure Game (TSR, 1998)
[MURPG] Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game (Marvel Comics, 2003)
[MHRP] Marvel Heroic Roleplaying (Margaret Weis Productions, 2012)
[PbtA] Powered by the Apocalypse
[PF] Pathfinder
[Trav] Traveller; Mongoose editions should be identified as [Trav Mongoose] or [Trav Mongoose] if needed
[RQ] RuneQuest; Mongoose editions should be identified as [RQ Mongoose] or [RQ2 Mongoose] if needed, the new RuneQuest in Glorantha should be identified as [RQG]
[SF] Starfinder
[SR] Shadowrun
[SW] Savage Worlds; Explorer Edition should be identified as [SW:EE] if needed, Deluxe as [SW:D]
[SWd6] Star Wars d6
[SWd20] Star Wars d20, if necessary [SWd20RCR] Star Wars d20 Revised Core Rules, and [SWSaga] Star Wars Saga Edition can be used to differentiate
[SWFFG] Star Wars by Fantasy Flight Games
[T&T] Tunnels and Trolls
[TFT] The Fantasy Trip
