Actual Play, Live from Indiecon!

Postby James Mullen » 11:34pm on 05 Nov 15

Vox Populi

The first meeting of the Steering Committee for the Ex-Evil Empire was not totally effective; out of the 10 proposals put forward by the Heroes, only two were passed:

  1. That the dangerous criminals languishing in the cells beneath the Dark Citadel should be pressed into service as tax collectors.
  2. That 'recreational herbs' should be legalised and then taxed... with the taxes presumably to be collected by the aforementioned criminal lunatics.

Unfortunately, we singularly failed to secure the state's borders, establish a stated-funded educational system or save an orphanage from marauding orcs; on the plus side of the equation, we also failed to establish a new despot, a secret police and the destabilisation of three bordering nations.

Thanks to Rhona, Toad, Anwesh, Andy, Elina, Adele, Carl and another Andy for playing.

Troublemakers

Part 1 of a 2 Part Adventure.

Set in a suburban Vermont town during the summer holidays, our family of a Shrimp, a Devil, their Dog and their adopted Newcomer stumble onto something epic...

Enjoying the fine summer day, Ping-Pong (the Dog) and 'John' (the Newcomer) go for a walk in the woods to explore his werewolf heritage away from spying eyes, but something goes terribly wrong when he tries to transform but Ping-Pong turns into a girl instead!

Soon joined by Firecracker (the Shrimp) and Rad (the Devil), the situation escalates as more dogs turn into people and people start turning into dogs, including their own babysitter Veronica and local policeman Officer Jenkins. Exploring the woods, they are led to an enormous boulder which cracks open when lightning strikes it, revealing a tunnel descending into the Earth below. John later finds out that this is a sacred site where an ancient but dangerous nature spirit was buried thousands of years ago.

The other kids try to cover for Officer Jenkins at the police station, by delivering donuts, but they are nearly caught out when they try breaking in to retrieve a notebook that has been confiscated from them. A wise owl tells John that until the dogs and people are returned to their true state, the Ancient Spirit will be awake, threatening the safety of the organised hike through the woods tomorrow..

To Be Continued...

Rhona is here too and she's told me about some exciting plans for the book cover; it sounds great and the proofs she's done for me capture the flavour precisely.

A World of Difference

The presenter, resident expert, camera operator and member-of-the-public on a daytime antiques TV show find themselves whisked to a strange new world of spirits & symbolic magic by the action of four antique mirrors; here are some edited extracts from their journal:

"Alan's loft is no longer a loft! We stepped off the ladder onto fresh grass and wild flowers, and found ourselves at the base of a tree."

"We saw smoke rising to the south and headed that way, but instead of the settlement we expected, it turned out to be a sinister casino steamer on the river."

"The steamboat captain thought he recognised Jasmine as we approached with intent to board, deferring to her and calling her a Queen..."

"In the lower deck hallway, a lady sat on a stool, 'knitting' with silk that became paper; there was indecipherable writing on the roll that spilled from her hands."

"A corridor marked 'Staff Only' was busy with small and gnomish men tinkering and arguing, arms deep in open panels as they worked with greasy tools."

"We found a prophecy in the archives of Madam Wurm: 'Restoration of the old kings & queens will take 1,000 years. When a door opens from a land of stone and logic and four named for the exiled royal families step through, those who remember will feel their presence and lead them back to throne. The choice they make will decide their fate forever.' "

"As we reached the city and docked at a stony, worn pier we sighted between two other steam ships, four black leather clad bikers with a pair of large, black wolves seemed to be awaiting our arrival; as the other passengers disembarked, they faded away on the breeze until only we remained. The leader of the bikers had 'DEATH' stitched onto the back of his jacket and though he let the first three of us disembark without quarrel, he stopped Jasmine and said that he had a message from her husband..."

We had to leave our adventure there, but fast-forwarding through destiny, we saw how the new arrivals tried to assume the royal positions of their forebears and master the arts of magic in this strange land: this worked out fortunately for two of them, but two others succumbed to their personal demons and ruled with an iron hand, corrupted by their power or worn-down by the endless bloodshed necessary to claim their thrones.

Thanks to Elaine, Steven, Esther and Andrew for making the playtest of this game so successful; that's another one on the 'develop further' list!

Troublemakers

Part 2 of a 2 part adventure.

John feels the call of the wild and runs off into the woods, but luckily Zee, the girl who lives next door, slips out from being grounded at home again (well, she is a Mouth) and joins Firecracker, Rad & Ping-Pong as they attempt to resolve the problem of humans turning into dogs and vice versa.

Rad and Firecracker's big brother Josh returns home from college and is persuaded to take them for a hike in the woods, despite the hunt for several missing people, which the FBI has been called in on; they navigate back to the cracked boulder and force their way down into the passage below, with Werewolf John at their heels. Ping-Pong gets swept away on the underground stream but is revived by a mysterious, buck-skinned woodsman in a cavern where he keeps the skeletons of ancient shamans at bay by means of an enchanted torch. The kids reunite as they flee back into the daylight, with Firecracker's head buzzing with ideas for a ritual that will restore the dogs to humans.

After being firmly & finally grounded at home by their worried parents, they have a sleepover in the front room of Mr & Mrs. Brown's house and concoct a plan... but that fails, so they concoct another plan... but that fails, so they concoct another plan. In the course of this, Zee acquires a magical squeaky toy that makes dogs obey her commands, but is forced to throw it at Werewolf John as they cower under the hollow of a tree's roots back in the woods; courageously, Rad charges at the wolf and frees his little sister and their friend.

Back at the sleepover that night, they resolve to put things right, with Firecracker dreaming/imagining a 'ritual' involving a star drawn in toothpaste on the sitting room carpet and singing Disney songs; Zee keeps their parents distracted while they perform the ritual, but her distraction is almost too good, as Mr. Brown looks outside for an imaginary stranger whilst being unaware of the shaman skeletons following the dogs to the house and surrounding it!

The ritual is performed in the nick of time, as John and the dogs start to turn back into humans; the fireflies that act as the skeletons eyes fly away and they crumble into heaps, so a very excited Ping-Pong runs out to grab a well-matured bone. The effort of the ritual is too much for Rad & Firecracker, who pass out in their sleeping bags, and since the people who were dogs can't remember what happened, Officer Jenkins ends up having the credit pinned on him with no idea why. The following morning, once order has been somewhat restored, Mr. Brown drove out to buy treats for everybody, but the car didn't get very far before it drove across the line of human bones and skulls surrounding the house; it looks like someone has got some explaining to do!

Thanks to Elina, Helen, Declan & Elaine for the wonderful morning of gaming.

The Final Voyage of the Selene

It's an odd but pleasing experience to be in a GMless game of my own design without having to actually facilitate it, so thanks to Indy Rich for offering this one. We set up the lives of Courier Kerenski, Lieutenant Kazarian, Professor Carris and Doctor Tsien as they embarked on a voyage back to Earth from the fringes of known space, with much hinging on the contents of the courier's package and the experiments of the Professor involving the ship's jump-drive.

We ended with only one death and in flashback discovered that he had been a spy on the ship, embedded there to uncover a traitor and bring them to justice; unfortunately, he tipped his hand at the wrong time and the Doctor took great pleasure on shutting him the wrong side of the escape pod door. She in turn failed to convince her father, the Professor, to leave his concerns behind and use his experiments to explore the universe, carrying his name to the stars. He in turn convinced his long-lost daughter to join him on Earth where they continued to refine the jump-drive, enjoying some notoriety from being among the survivors of the Selene.

The Courier also escaped the disaster after delivering his package to the Professor, one of his personal heroes, but some times later, fate caught up with him, as the shadowy organisation seeking justice for the 34th Battalion executed him in vengeance for allowing the Doctor to escape their plans for her.

Again, mega-mega-thanks to Rich for his excellent work on restyling The Final Voyage of the Selene and for facilitating the game; cheers, collect a beer of me soon mate! :D

Burn Hollywood Burn

As a replacement for the Sunday night game that has become semi-traditional, I ran a big party game on Saturday night: it was as camp and gonzo as you would expect. Without wishing to give too much away about the complex and multi-layered nuances of the plot, the following highlights occurred:

  • A roving reporter conducted a hard-nosed interview with an vengeful god and humiliated him on international television.
  • The underpaid rent-a-cop to the stars of Hollywood went for a row on Christoper Walken's boating lake.
  • The criminal mastermind behind the heist of Christoper Walken's collection of Aztec artefacts faced his just desserts in the afterlife: a Justin Bieber concert.
  • A celebrity make-over expert preserved Cher's collection of wigs for future generations.
  • Some hired muscle helped to sacrifice a biker on the pool table of a cheap English theme pub.
  • A maid was asked if she could work Tuesdays and whether she did windows, before being immolated in a toilet by her prospective employer.
  • A criminal tech expert challenged a vengeful god to a pool match for ownership of the worrld and, upon losing, said "Best of three?"

More stuff happened, largely unrepeatable on a public forum, but the secrets of Christoper Walken's bedroom were revealed to at least one character.

Fiasco: The Fall

Declan very kindly offered to run Fiasco on Sunday morning when I was looking for something to do before leaving the convention, so me, him, Elaine and John K ended up playing this away from the madding crowd of the main hall, at my usual gaming perch on the comfy chairs.

The game was excellent, a post-apocalyptic tale of crime & punishment, love & obsession, betrayal & revenge: blood was spilled, a pet cemetary was blown up and we were chased by bandits who beheaded my character, Dave of "Dave's Cash 'n' Guns", while the man he was bounty-hunting got clean away by faking his own death. Even his sister thought he was dead, but she didn't mourn for long before turning their once-jointly owned saloon into a thriving private business, until one day her obsessed stalker returned to claim her heart, having become a self-made man in the interim... and she cleanly blew his brains out.

An awesome end to the con and thanks once again to everybody in all the games I ran/facilitated/played in.
